Prayer walk Weoley Castle January 31st 2009

Church members around Weoley Castle Square took part in a prayer walk on 31st January Saturday. Many people from within and outside the church communities of Weoley Castle joined forces to pray for the people of Weoley castle; showing solidarity with the community. A further prayer walk is planned soon.

Castle Square ice isn’t our problem says Weoley Councillor

This week, as pensioners avoided the icy Castle Square shops, Weoley Councillor Eddie Freeman (Conservative) has said that the ice on Castle Square is the responsibility of shop keepers and not the council. Local residents and store keepers have asked the council to clear ice from the popular shopping centre but have been told that they must deal with the problem themselves.

“We feel abandoned by the council” said one resident.

Adding to the chaos was a claim by Cllr Orborn that Birmingham City Council was running low on grit, a claim contradicting a Birmingham Mail article earlier in the week that the council had plenty of grit to get them through the icy and snowy spell. Community Action Northfield will be presenting its petition for grit bins on the square and many streets throughout Weoley at the next full council meeting.

More reports of ungritted roads from Longbridge

Ungritted Central Avenue

Using our Facebook group, residents of Longbridge have reported many untreated roads there. Rebecca Ferriday told us that Callowbrook lane was treacherous. Leanne Tomkins told us that West heath primary school was hazardous and Hannah Share told us that Central Avenue was ungritted. If you live on a road that hasn’t been gritted then message us and let us know. Have your say!

Pensioners slip over on Castle Square : Council do nothing

Yesterday we took reports of several pensioners slipping over on the icy untreated pavement of Castle Square. When we went down to collect signatures for our petition to get a grit bin on the Square I even witnessed a mature gentleman falling over in front of the betting shop. Residents who signed our petition all agreed that the Conservative run council had been inactive and should be gritting the Square and they were to blame for the accidents. We contacted Weoley’s councillors but they have given us no response.

Sunday 25 January, Community Action Northfield handed out free dog pooh bins from Castle Pets and collected signitures for a petition to get suitable bins placed around the lake. The bags were donated by Castle Pets.

Poor council gritting makes Weoley shopping areas treacherous

Birmingham City Council have left the Weoley shopping areas of Castle Square and Shenley Fields Rd ungritted and slippy. Many local shoppers have complained to Community Action Northfield that they fear shoppers will be put off from shopping in their local stores while the snowy conditions last. Community Action Northfield will be petitioning the local Conservative run council to complain about the atrocious conditions that they have left unchecked in the shopping areas of Weoley.

Prayer Walk in Weoley Castle Square

Church members around Weoley Castle Square will take part in a prayer walk this Saturday. Everyone is welcome to attend. The walk will start at 11am, from the Christmas Tree in Weoley Castle Square. The aim will be to walk around the Weoley Castle Churches. The walk will try to be finished between 12-12.30 depending on numbers of people who attend and pace.

Yesterday, residents of Ackleton Grove and Marston Rd in Weoley Castle supported our petition to put street lights in the alley that links the two roads. They say that the lights are needed because the alley is dark and often attracts gangs of teenagers drinking alcohol. Please find in the photos a scan of a letter just received from Birmingham City Council. In brief they confirm that Weoley castle wifi is technically easy but there problems would be ensuring that people don’t misuse the wifi system. I think it is worth while understanding how American public libraries got round this problem a long time ago to provide unrestricted access for the public making legitimate use of the internet. It would also be interesting to know what other cities have done.
